MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane), also known as “organic sulfur”, is a naturally occurring sulfur compound that can be used both internally and externally and has been demonstrated to have a number of extraordinary healing and restorative properties:
MSM is a highly effective anti-inflammatory agent used to treat arthritis, as well as back and muscle pain. It has been shown to prevent local inflammation by forestalling adverse immune reactions at their basic genetic level.
MSM has outstanding pain-relieving properties that are most likely due to the check it places on prostaglandins and leukotrienes, hormone-like substances in the body that unleash inflammatory forces which are linked to pain production.
MSM plays an integral role in the healthy functioning of the body’s connective tissue, including joint cartilage. Clinical studies have shown the beneficial effects of MSM on the hair, skin, and nails of humans and also the fur and hooves of animals. MSM lends suppleness to the skin, while adding a lively sheen to the hair and nails, making them less apt to split and crack. These benefits are probably related to MSM’s sulfur content. Sound connective tissue is rich in sulfur. When sulfur is lacking, health problems can arise. MSM is comprised of 34% sulfur, which makes it an excellent supplement for the proper maintenance of connective tissue in the body.
Clinical studies have demonstrated the value of MSM in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Scientists have determined that the sulfur component of the body’s cartilage diminishes with age, causing a degeneration of the joints. It does not help matters that some arthritis drugs actually deplete the body's store of sulfur. Rich in sulfur as it is, MSM alleviates the pain of knee osteoarthritis.
MSM is an immunomodulator. Which is to say that it keeps the immune system from reacting in a dangerous way to harmful substances and prevents it from producing antibodies against the body’s own tissues. It has been shown, for example, to check the development of abnormal antibodies that can react negatively to the body’s vital store of collagen (insoluble fibrous proteins that are the main component of connective tissue). As well, MSM inhibits the production of damaging rheumatoid factor and antinuclear antibodies (ANA).
MSM is excellent in alleviating seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and other allergies. Indeed, a preliminary study in 2002 discovered that consuming 2600mg of MSM every day for a month reduced allergy-associated symptoms in people clinically diagnosed with allergies
MSM is extremely safe, with clinical trials that have investigated its use in doses ranging from 1500mg to 6000mg daily. MSM is so benign, in fact, that Dr. Stanley Jacob relates the use of MSM in his patients at doses of up to 100 grams daily with no adverse effects under strict clinical conditions in a hospital. All the same, women of childbearing age who intend to become pregnant or who are pregnant or breast-feeding should always consult with their physician before taking any supplement or medication. Similarly, those who are allergic or sensitive to certain sulfur-containing substances (e.g. sulfa antibiotics, the sulfites used to preserve wine, or foods like broccoli or cauliflower) should consult with their physician before taking MSM. More often than not, however, even individuals suffering such allergies find that they do not have a problem with consuming or using MSM, inasmuch as MSM has a chemical structure that is very different from other sulfur-containing substances.
Our MSM is purified by distillation, which is the best and most integral way of producing MSM. It is also subject to the most stringent and demanding criteria of heavy metal testing.
